The town of Aspen itself emerged in the late 19th century during the Colorado Silver Boom, becoming a hub for silver mining. However, by the 1930s, the silver industry collapsed, and Aspen faced economic decline.
The transformation of Aspen into a world-renowned destination began in the 1940s. Friedl Pfeifer, a member of the 10th Mountain Division, and industrialist Walter Paepcke envisioned the town as a cultural and recreational destination.
