Aspen Mountain -The Ski Capitol since 1940
Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax, holds a rich history as a prominent ski destination and a symbol of the luxurious alpine lifestyle. The town of Aspen itself emerged in the late 19th century during the Colorado Silver Boom, becoming a hub for silver mining. However, by the 1930s, the silver industry collapsed, and Aspen faced economic decline.
The transformation of Aspen into a world-renowned ski resort began in the 1940s. Friedl Pfeifer, a member of the 10th Mountain Division, and industrialist Walter Paepcke envisioned the town as a cultural and recreational destination. With the help of the Aspen Skiing Company, they developed Aspen Mountain as a ski resort. In 1947, the ski lift on Aspen Mountain was installed, marking the beginning of its rise to prominence.
Why Aspen is Popular Among the Famous?
Aspen Mountain is a remote location where celebrities can disconnect and be away from the paparazzi. The beautiful views and private airport helped make Aspen what it is today. It became a favorite destination for celebrities, artists, and affluent individuals, establishing the town’s reputation as a glamorous winter retreat. The mountain’s steep slopes and challenging terrain attracted avid skiers, and its inclusion in the newly formed Aspen Skiing Company’s offerings solidified its status as a premier ski destination.
The 1950 FIS World Championships brought international attention to Aspen Mountain, further enhancing its prestige. Over the years, the mountain hosted numerous skiing events, including World Cup races and the 1985 World Alpine Ski Championships.
Why Aspen is Unique?
Aspen Mountain is unique in that it offers a ski-in, ski-out experience right from the heart of the town. Its vertical rise, diverse trails, and the Silver Queen Gondola contribute to its allure. The iconic Little Nell Hotel, located at the base, has been a symbol of luxury since its opening in 1989.
Beyond skiing, Aspen Mountain has been a cultural and intellectual center. The Aspen Institute, founded by Walter Paepcke, hosts conferences and events, fostering discussions on a wide range of topics.
Today, Aspen Mountain stands as a testament to the vision of those who sought to transform a struggling mining town into a world-class resort. Its history intertwines with the cultural, economic, and recreational evolution of Aspen, making it a cherished destination for winter enthusiasts and a symbol of alpine elegance.

Why Aspen?
Aspen is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and is renowned for its diverse terrain, top-notch facilities, and a vibrant apres-ski culture. The area is composed of four ski resorts: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass, each offering its unique characteristics.
Best Areas for Beginners:
- Buttermilk: Buttermilk is often regarded as the best mountain for beginners. It offers a variety of gentle, well-groomed runs specifically designed for newcomers. The terrain is forgiving and perfect for building fundamental skills. Buttermilk is also home to the Panda Peak learning area, which caters to kids and beginners.
Best Areas for Intermediates:
Snowmass: Snowmass is the largest of the four resorts and offers extensive intermediate terrain. You’ll find a multitude of blue (intermediate) runs that provide plenty of space for intermediates to explore and progress. The Big Burn area at Snowmass is particularly famous for its beautiful intermediate trails.
Aspen Mountain (Ajax): While Aspen Mountain is known for its advanced terrain, it does have some intermediate runs, primarily on the lower mountain. These runs can be a good choice for intermediates who want to experience the unique atmosphere of downtown Aspen and enjoy more challenging terrain as they progress.
Aspen Highlands: While Aspen Highlands is famous for its expert terrain, it also offers some blue runs and a variety of tree-lined intermediate slopes. It’s a great place for intermediates to venture into more challenging terrain while enjoying fantastic views.
Aspen’s reputation as a world-class ski destination is well-deserved. Its combination of stunning mountain scenery, high-quality snow conditions, and diverse terrain make it an excellent choice for both beginners and intermediates. Whether you’re just starting your skiing or snowboarding journey or looking to refine your skills, Aspen has something to offer for everyone.
